We are looking for a seasoned Senior Database Modernization Engineer to support a strategic initiative for our customer. In this role, you will be the driving force behind migrating legacy monolithic SQL Server systems into a modern, distributed Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL environment. Rather than just moving data, you will be building a robust "migration factory," managing complex multitenant architectures, and leveraging tools like Babelfish to accelerate the transition to a microservices architecture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Migration Factory & Multitenancy: Design and implement a highly automated database migration factory using PowerShell, ensuring repeatable, secure, and low-downtime cutovers from SQL Server to Aurora PostgreSQL. A key focus will be successfully navigating and designing for multitenant database architectures during the migration.

  • Babelfish Integration & Analysis: Lead the implementation of Babelfish for Aurora PostgreSQL to accelerate the migration of T-SQL applications.

  • Deep Performance Profiling: Conduct rigorous performance comparisons between legacy SQL Server and Babelfish/Aurora. Identify bottlenecks, optimize query execution, and determine when to rely on Babelfish versus when a native PostgreSQL rewrite is necessary.

  • Architectural Partnership: Work hand-in-hand with the Software Migration Architect to align database structures with the new microservices architecture (e.g., database-per-service patterns).

  • Cloud Implementation: Configure, optimize, and manage Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL environments, ensuring high availability, scalability, and operational excellence.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the critical bridge between data and modernization teams, operating efficiently in an asynchronous environment to document decisions, share best practices, and unblock engineering efforts.

Required Skills & Tools

  • Core Database Engines: 5+ years of solid experience working with Microsoft SQL Server and 5+ years with PostgreSQL.

  • AWS Cloud Expertise: Deep knowledge of Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL (configuration, tuning, and scaling).

  • Migration & Modernization Toolset: Prior production experience with Babelfish for Aurora PostgreSQL is key; however, candidates with an exceptionally strong dual-engine background (SQL Server and Postgres) will be considered. Proficiency with AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) and AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) is required.

  • Automation & Scripting: Advanced proficiency in PowerShell specifically applied to database automation and building migration factories.

  • Strategic Collaboration: Proven ability to partner closely with Software Migration Architects to align database strategies with application decomposition.

  • Work Culture: Strong communication and documentation skills with a proven ability to thrive in a remote, asynchronous work model.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and version control using GitHub.

  • Understanding of .NET Core/.NET 6+ modernization, Entity Framework (EF Core), and general application-side logic.
